MACROHABITAT- means that before one starts a bird house, that area must be a swiftlet area. Ideally the surroundings should have 50% of low growing crops below 1 meter, 30% of high growing plants above 5 meters and 20% of water source like river or sea.
Swiftlets spend 12 hours a day flying none stop to catch insects. They will first hunt in short plants area (like padi field) from 6-10 am then 10am -1pm around high crops area,1-3pm or 4:30pm near water source and then back to low crops area from 3-6pm. Some birds with nestling will come back a few times to the farm to feed their young. Avoid building a farm near highly polluted area.
MICROHABITAT - This is where human involve the most. One will need to provide suitable conditions in a farm to attract swiftlets. The right temperature (26-30 degree C), humidity around 85% to 95%, right flying path where birds are easy to enter and leave the farm, free from disturbances like predators, winds, darkness of 2-6 lux, right entrance hole and etc are needed to imitate the conditions in caves when swiftlets naturally live. Bird calling chirp is also a very important factor. When are these factors are look into, the sucessful rate will be much higher.
